Helping Families Find a Special Needs Dentist in El Paso
The Burgess Family Special Needs Fund was established after our sister, Karen Burgess, who uses a wheelchair, had to leave El Paso and travel to San Antonio to find a special needs dentist who could care for her. Before that, she went more than 10 years without seeing a dentist. That experience showed us how hard it is to find a special needs dentist in El Paso, especially for adults with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, dementia or Alzheimer's, and other disabilities.
Our goal is to change that by helping create local access to special needs dentistry, close to home and surrounded by family. The fund supports programs, clinics, and dentists who share our commitment to providing exceptional care for individuals with special needs and disabilities in El Paso, including adults.
In 2026, our family also helped create the Burgess Family Special Needs Dentistry Fellowship at Texas Tech Health El Paso's Hunt School of Dental Medicine, in memory of our mother, Jan Burgess. Starting in fall 2027, the fellowship will train dentists in special needs dentistry (also called special care dentistry), and we hope many of them stay in El Paso.
