Community Impact Summer Internship Program Opens Applications for Nonprofit Host Organizations

The Paso del Norte Community Foundation is proud to launch the third year of the Community Impact Summer Internship Program, an initiative designed to strengthen both the nonprofit sector and the future workforce of the Paso del Norte region. Presented in collaboration with Workforce Solutions Borderplex and supported by Bank of America and Union Pacific, the program connects college students with paid summer internships at local nonprofit organizations.

This year, the program is seeking 15 nonprofit organizations interested in hosting student interns during the summer experience.

Since its launch, the Community Impact Summer Internship Program has become more than a summer employment opportunity. It is an investment in the region’s nonprofit ecosystem, providing organizations with additional capacity while introducing students to meaningful careers rooted in service, leadership, and community impact.

For many nonprofits, summer months bring increased programming demands, community events, outreach efforts, and operational needs. Hosting an intern can provide critical support while also creating space for organizations to mentor and inspire the next generation of professionals and civic leaders.

Interns participating in the program will complete paid work experiences while developing professional skills in communication, project management, collaboration, and emerging workplace tools, including artificial intelligence applications. Students will also receive mentorship and professional development designed to help prepare them for long-term career success.

Equally important, the experience gives students direct exposure to the nonprofit sector — one of the region’s most important drivers of community well-being and economic impact. By working alongside nonprofit professionals, students gain a deeper understanding of how organizations address issues such as education, health, economic opportunity, social services, and quality of life across the Borderplex.

The program reflects a shared commitment among community partners to workforce development and regional collaboration. Through the continued partnership of Workforce Solutions Borderplex, Bank of America, Union Pacific, and the Paso del Norte Community Foundation, students are able to gain hands-on experience while nonprofit organizations receive meaningful support that advances their missions.

Last year’s program demonstrated the value of connecting students with organizations where they can contribute in tangible ways — from communications and marketing projects to community engagement initiatives and operational support. Many host organizations reported that interns brought fresh perspectives, new energy, and valuable technical skills that enhanced their work during the summer months.

As the initiative enters its third year, the Foundation hopes even more nonprofits will take advantage of the opportunity to help shape future leaders while strengthening their own organizational capacity.

Organizations selected to participate will host interns during the summer program period and provide supervision, mentorship, and meaningful work experiences that align with the student’s interests and career goals.

Nonprofits interested in serving as host sites are encouraged to apply soon, as participation is limited to 15 organizations.
