Investing in Futures: Scholarship Reception Celebrates the Connections Between Donors and Students
Every scholarship begins with someone who believes in another person's potential.
That spirit was on full display at the Paso del Norte Community Foundation's Fourth Annual Scholarship Reception, where scholarship recipients, their families, donors, volunteer reviewers, and community leaders gathered to celebrate an investment that extends far beyond financial support.
This year, through 43 scholarship funds, the Foundation awarded more than $571,000 to 234 students, helping them pursue higher education, technical training, and career aspirations. But as CEO Tracy Yellen reminded attendees, the evening wasn't about the numbers.
"Tonight is one of my favorite events of the year because it brings together the people who make opportunity possible with the students whose lives are being changed because of that generosity," Yellen shared. "Every scholarship represented in this room began with someone who believed education has the power to transform lives."
That message came to life through two powerful stories.
Longtime scholarship donor ElizaBeth Duran reflected on the legacy of her late husband, Coach Archie Duran, whose life was dedicated to mentoring young people through athletics, education, and service. The Coach Archie Duran Memorial Scholarship has honored students who embody the same values of leadership, perseverance, integrity, and compassion that defined his life. Although this year marked the final scholarship awarded through the fund, Coach Duran's legacy continues through the students it has inspired.
Scholarship recipient Kevin Lopez, a recent graduate of Bowie High School who will attend The University of Texas at El Paso this fall, shared his own story of perseverance, service, and hope. As the recipient of three scholarships, including the Coach Archie Duran Memorial Scholarship, Kevin spoke about overcoming challenges, believing in himself, and embracing what he called the "sea of possibilities." His heartfelt remarks reminded everyone in attendance that scholarships do more than help pay for college, they empower students to dream bigger and create brighter futures.
The evening also recognized the many individuals who make the scholarship program possible, including scholarship fundholders, volunteer scholarship reviewers, Foundation staff, educators, and families. Behind every scholarship is a community of people who dedicate their time, expertise, and generosity to ensuring students have opportunities to succeed.
As recipients begin the next chapter of their educational journeys, they do so knowing an entire community believes in their potential. And thanks to the generosity of scholarship fundholders across the Paso del Norte region, that investment will continue creating opportunities for generations to come.
