Local students receive $40,000 in scholarships from the Jim Omohundro Courageous Leadership Award & Scholarship

The Paso del Norte Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2024 Jim Omohundro Courageous Leadership Award and Scholarship to four students from Eastwood High School.

Ryan Omohundro established the Jim Omohundro Courageous Leadership Award and Scholarship in honor of his father, Jim Omohundro. The scholarship benefits graduating seniors of Eastwood High School's Track and Field/Cross Country programs who have demonstrated high achievement in athletics and academics.

From 1974 to 1982, Jim Omohundro served as a dedicated police officer with the El Paso Department. Despite suffering major injuries while on duty, he persevered and eventually was forced to take an early retirement. Motivated to continue supporting his family, Mr. Omohundro opened his own construction company – J. Omohundro Construction, Inc., until his passing in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and determination.

Inspired by courage, dedication, and endurance, Ryan Omohundro became a devoted distance runner, a four-year letterman on the Track and Cross-Country Team, and a Valedictorian from Eastwood in 2001. Ryan and his family established this prestigious annual scholarship award to honor his dad’s legacy and recognize the accomplishment of exemplary acts of courageous leadership from the Eastwood Running Club student-athletes on and off the track.

Recipients of the 2024 Jim Omohundro Memorial Courageous Leadership Award and Scholarship:

  • Giovanna Zubia
  • Joules Payan
  • Leonardo Espino
  • Maximus Mancilla

Each recipient will receive a one-year $10,000 scholarship.

"Being a part of the Jim Omohundro Courage Memorial Award and Scholarship Selection Committee has been one of my greatest blessings! We have had some very amazing student-athletes apply for this scholarship this year. All four of the recipients had many great accomplishments during their four years at Eastwood High School--both academically and in Track and Cross Country,” said Lydia Williams, member of the Scholarship Selection Committee. “They are all very inspiring young adults and have bright futures ahead of them!”
