Three DREAMers Awarded Scholarships
The Paso del Norte Community Foundation is pleased to announce the three recipients of the Lorenzo Almanza Dreamer’s Scholarship for 2021. Established this year by native El Pasoan and Navy veteran, Lorenzo Almanza, the DREAMers Scholarship supports first-time college students who are eligible for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
The three recipients will each be awarded $1,000 to support their educational goals in the fields of education, general studies, and nursing at The University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College. The 2021 recipients include:
- Miss Garcia, who aspires to support students like herself by establishing a program to help guide undocumented students prepare for life after high school.
- Miss Gutierrez, who will continue her education at The University of Texas. She aspires to be a bilingual teacher to help students feel confident in school.
- Miss Olvera, who will pursue a career in the medical field or dentistry. Her goal is return to her home city to provide medical support to the community.
Mr. Almanza is an El Paso native who served 29 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs after being honorably discharged from the Navy. While growing up in a large family in El Paso, Mr. Almanza faced many struggles, but experienced firsthand the kindness of friends and those in his community. Throughout his life, Mr. Almanza stayed committed to helping those in need and continues to support and grow a community of philanthropy by sharing his resources for student DREAMers.
